The universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearings of the drive shaft should be lubricated with gear oil. However, it is generally found in automotive repair that the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearings of the drive shaft are lubricated with calcium-based lubricating grease (commonly known as butter), which is actually an incorrect lubrication method, leading to premature damage of a large number of cross shaft needle roller bearings. During disassembly, it can be clearly seen that the cross shaft journal shows squeezed grooves, and the journal and needle roller are severely lacking oil. Why does this phenomenon occur? Because the lubricating oil nozzle of the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing is an ordinary butter nozzle, it gives people an illusion, and butter has been generally added for lubrication for a long time. In fact, it is very difficult to add butter to the needle roller bearing from the oil nozzle with a butter gun. As we all know, the viscosity of butter is high. When butter is added to the inner cavity of the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing from the oil nozzle with a butter gun, the resistance increases when the butter enters the narrow inner cavity oil passage, the butter pressure increases, and the pressure relief valve opposite the oil nozzle is pushed open and overflows. This phenomenon will also be mistaken by drivers and repair personnel as being full of butter. In fact, the butter does not enter between the needle rollers at all, and it is also very difficult to reach the end face of the cross shaft journal. During disassembly and repair, even if the butter is forcibly applied to the surface of the needle roller and the journal, it can play some lubricating role, but for the lubrication effect of the cross shaft needle roller bearing, calcium-based lubricating grease is far inferior to gear oil. The reasons are: a. The universal joint has to withstand a large torque and alternating load during operation, and the oil film toughness of calcium-based lubricating grease is poor, and it is difficult to form a good oil film on the friction surface between the bearing and the journal. b. The needle roller bearing of the universal joint cross shaft can only rotate in place during operation and cannot rotate along the steel bowl and the cross shaft journal, and the calcium-based lubricating grease has poor rolling properties, so a new oil film cannot be formed immediately after the oil film is broken. c. Calcium-based lubricating grease is a mixture of lubricating oil and calcium soap. During use, due to the deterioration and evaporation of lubricating oil, the grease becomes harder calcium soap. Calcium soap itself not only cannot play a lubricating role, but also hinders the rolling of the needle roller on the journal. In addition, there is no oil discharge measure in the universal joint cross shaft, and the deteriorated lubricating grease cannot be discharged, and new oil is difficult to inject, thus greatly accelerating the wear of the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing. In order to change the wrong practice of using butter instead of gear oil to lubricate the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing, it is recommended to use the following maintenance methods to improve the service life of the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing. a. After removing the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing, thoroughly clean it, remove all residual grease (it can be boiled in water or cleaned in gasoline), and then immerse it in gear oil for 2-10 minutes before installation. During use, pay attention to: After the car drives through water, the oil should be replaced in time. The oil should be changed every 2000-3500 km. This method has been tested and can extend the life of the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing by 2-3 times. b. Special hydraulic injection equipment can be used to regularly lubricate the universal joint cross shaft needle roller bearing of the drive shaft.
